Girls flag football season taking sprint to finish

The San Diego Section playoff tournament for girls flag football kicks off Nov. 12 in four divisions. There are 48 total slots (12 teams per division). League champions automatically qualify.

Playoffs will consist of four knockout rounds (first round, quarterfinals, semifinals, finals).

Section championship games are scheduled Nov. 23 at a site to be determined: Division IV (11 a.m.), Division III (12:30 p.m.), Division II (2 p.m.) and Division I (3:30 p.m.).

The playoff field has greatly expanded from two divisions last year.

A look around South County, reveals that Otay Ranch has the top record among Metro Conference teams at 9-0, followed by Hilltop at 8-3, Bonita Vista at 9-5, Castle Park at 9-6. CVLCC is 8-2.

Otay Ranch improved to 5-0 in Metro-Mesa play following Monday’s 16-6 win at Olympian (6-7 overall, 1-4 in league).

Bonita Vista, last year’s Division I CIF champion, improved to 4-1 in Metro-Mesa League play after shutting out visiting Eastlake, 40-0, on Monday.

Sophomore Mia Ramirez passed for 342 yards and six touchdowns to pace the Lady Barons. Senior Jamiya Valenciano (eight catches, 124 yards) and Layla Schoen (four catches, 67 yards) each had two TD receptions.

Eastlake dropped to 3-5 overall, 0-5 in league.

Mater Dei Catholic is 2-2 in Metro-Mesa League, 6-8 overall.

Hilltop edged host Crawford, 25-19, on Tuesday after topping host Chula Vista, 32-12, in a Metro-South Bay League game on Monday to improve to 2-0 in league play.

Chula Vista fell to 2-7 overall, 0-2 in league play.

Castle Park improved to 2-0 in Metro-South Bay League play after sidelining Sweetwater, 53-0, on Monday and Chula Vista, 46-27, on Oct. 7.

San Ysidro (7-7 overall) defeated visiting Southwest, 30-6, on Monday behind three passing touchdowns from senior Adriana Lopez to improve to 2-0 in Metro-Pacific League play.

The Lady Raiders fell to 7-6 overall, 0-1 in league play.
