San Diego State University senior softball player Kayla Jordan (ex-Bonita Vista High School) has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced March 24. It was the second career weekly league honor for Jordan and second in three weeks (also March 10).
Jordan helped the Aztecs (20-12, 3-0 MW) go 3-2 last week, including a sweep of UNLV in the series opener for both teams. The outfielder batted .556 (10-for-18) with three home runs, six RBI, six runs, a double, a walk and a stolen base, while posting a 1.111 slugging percentage, .579 on-base percentage and perfect fielding mark in four chances. Jordan, who led SDSU in 10 offensive categories over the week, had a hit in all five games and multiple hits in four of the five contests.
The 2012 MW Freshman of the Year began her week by going 2-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs vs. UConn on Tuesday. She then had a solo home run and a walk vs. No. 17/16 Arizona on Wednesday.
Jordan saved her best for the weekend sweep over Rebels, batting .636 (7-for-11) with a homer, three RBI, three runs and a stolen base over the three games. She finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in a 5-1 win over UNLV on Friday and was 2-for-3 with a run in a 4-0 shutout on Saturday. On Sunday, Jordan had two hits, including a two-run homer, and two runs in a 7-3 victory.
On the season, Jordan is batting .413 (43-for-104) with four home runs, 16 RBI and 29 runs scored. She leads SDSU in eight offensive categories — batting average, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles (10), total bases (67), hit by pitch (3, tied), on-base percentage (.474) and stolen bases (10) — and is the only Aztec to start all 32 games this year.
With enough at-bats to now qualify (100), Jordan ranks second in SDSU single-season batting average, fourth in on-base percentage, fifth in OPS percentage (1.118) and seventh in slugging percentage (.644).
Among the league leaders, Jordan is ranked second in total bases, tied for second in doubles, tied for third in stolen bases, tied for fourth in runs, fifth in hits, sixth in slugging percentage, seventh in batting average and tied for 10th in homers.
San Diego State hits the road for a three-game series at Boise State, beginning Friday, March 27, at 4 p.m. MT.
Two weeks ago, the SDSU softball team swept the Mountain West weekly awards, with Jordan being named the MW Player of the Week and sophomore Erica Romero (Corona) being selected as the MW Pitcher of the Week. It was Jordan’s first career MW weekly award and Romero’s second (both this season).
The duo helped the Aztecs (15-8) to a 4-1 record at the Judi Garman Classic March 6-8 in Fullerton. SDSU picked up wins over Pacific, Iowa, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton, with its only loss coming to No. 3/2 Michigan.
Jordan batted .600 (12-for-20) with six RBI, six doubles, four runs and two stolen bases over the five games (all starts). She led San Diego State in batting average, at-bats, hits, doubles, RBI (tied), total bases (18), slugging percentage (.900), on-base percentage (.600) and stolen bases (2), while posting a perfect fielding percentage in three chances.
Jordan began her weekend with a single and a run against Pacific on March 6. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI double vs. No. 3/2 Michigan and 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs and two doubles vs. Iowa on March 7. On March 8, Jordan was 3-for-4 with a double and stolen base vs. Long Beach State and 3-for-5 with an RBI, run, two doubles and a stolen base over Cal State Fullerton.
