Did you know we have a Cuban bakery in Chula Vista? There is only one of them in this area and it’s been a well-kept secret. It is a hole in the wall, tucked away in a deep corner on the forgotten end of Third Avenue near Quintard Street.
One thing that’s quite consistent with sharing some of my favorite places and dishes in town is that they are true little hidden gems; establishments hidden from the public eye or items hidden in the depth of their own menus. The aesthetics of some of these storefronts may not be polished on the outside, but inside they are spotless and sure are worth the bite.
Los Pollos Rotisserie & Cuban Bakery has been at its current location for three years. The seating area is very small but the kitchen is ginormous, able to cater for large parties, which they do. Chickens are fired up every day on the rotisserie and sold whole or plated with delicious sides like congri (Cuban style black beans and rice). Platanos maduros (fried sweet plantains) are a must-try!
Every item and pastry, sweet and savory, is made in-house. My favorite items are their delicious potato balls — meat surrounded with a mashed potato “dough” formed into a ball then fried. There are two kinds: beef and a spicy chicken; both are delicious and will have you running back for more.
Los Pollos also offers flaky pastry empanadas, which are crisp and delicious, stuffed with beef, chicken, spicy chicken or spinach and cheese. The flakey pastry goodness extends to sweets, with classic Cuban pastry flavors like guava, coconut and mango strudels.
Enjoy this taste of Cuba!
