Jose Perez Rodriguez, 35, of Chula Vista, was sentenced Friday to 13 years in state prison for setting fire to his girlfriend’s home after they had an argument.
Rodriguez, who is also known as Jose German Rodriguez, was given the term by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Matthew Braner, who gave him credit for serving 225 days.
Besides arson, Rodriguez also pleaded guilty to domestic violence, residential burglary, and resisting an executive officer. His girlfriend was in the courtroom audience, but she did not speak.
Deputy District Attorney Ted Fiorito asked for 14 years in prison. The probation department recommended 13 years.
Restitution will be discussed at a later hearing. Rodriguez might be ordered to pay for some damages of the Feb. 20 fire at 1003 Monserate Ave. in Chula Vista. Rodriguez spilled gasoline in the master bedroom, living room, kitchen, and garage then set the house ablaze after fighting with his girlfriend at a party in San Diego earlier that night.
A charge of identity theft involving the theft of $400 from his girlfriend’s bank account was dismissed after the guilty pleas to the other charges. He was convicted of misdemeanor drunk driving in 2014 in which he was sentenced to 100 days in jail.
