A South Bay woman who stabbed a National City woman to death in 2009 was sentenced Feb. 2 to 15 years to life in prison. Another women who bought the knife used to kill the victim was sentenced earlier to 11 years in prison.
Antoinette Latrice Dokes, 20, was fined $10,000 by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Timothy Walsh, who gave her credit for already serving 656 days in jail. She had a number of supporters at the sentencing. Dokes was convicted by a jury in November of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit assault and vandalism of the victim’s car.
The victim was Justice Brown, 18, who was killed April 17, 2009, on a sidewalk on East Ninth Street near A Avenue in National City.
The jury also convicted Rachel Elizabeth Wheelis, 21, of voluntary manslaughter, and she was sentenced to 11 years on Dec. 7, 2010.
Wheelis was seen on a security camera at the Walmart store in Chula Vista. She bought the knife and was with Dokes. Wheelis drove Dokes to the scene where Brown was confronted.
Dokes had a dispute with Brown over a mutual boyfriend and his car. Dokes and the victim had been seeing the same man and she was upset over a car he let the victim use, said Deputy District Attorney Gregg McClain.
McClain said Brown was stabbed in the left side of her chest and the blade “punctured her heart.”
Wheelis was in the car when Dokes stabbed the victim.
The jury deliberated two days before reaching verdicts.
