As we enter the final stretch of our spring 2024 semester, we’d like to highlight our achievements and look ahead to both exciting and challenging times. Mark your calendars for the “State of the District and State Update” on April 12, from 9 to 11 am, at the Performing Arts Center. Esteemed speakers, including representatives from the Governor’s office and San Diego Regional EDC, will share insights on the work that is occurring locally and statewide, recognizing the integral role education plays in supporting our communities and workforce.
Southwestern College is the home of the Jaguars and our mission is to guide you through your “Jaguar Journey” towards academic, career, and personal success. We’re excited to announce that we’re opening early enrollment for both the Summer and Fall 2024 semesters, starting April 22. Whether you’re a high school student looking for dual enrollment options or next steps after graduation, or an adult seeking to further your education/career preparation, we are here to guide you on your educational and career path. According to a recent regional economic development report, 84% of the careers in San Diego County require a degree, certificate, or credential. A college education and training are as important as they ever have been.
“We understand the importance of making informed decisions about your education, so take advantage of this extra time to explore your options with our counselors, and let us be part of your Jaguar Journey,” states Dean of Enrollment Services, Octavio Cruz Jr.
Join us at the SWC “Become a Jaguar” event on April 27 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Chula Vista Campus, where we’ll help you explore your options. There will also be a transfer fair on April 11, from 10 am to 1 pm, where you can connect with representatives from various universities.
For our younger learners in grades 4th through 12th, registration for the Youth Enrichment and Skills (Y.E.S.) Academy will open soon and take place in June and July. This program offers a unique opportunity for kids to engage in hands-on learning experiences in arts, sciences, technology, and leadership development.
“Y.E.S. Academy is one of the few summer programs offered in the South Bay,” Nancy Nieto, Y.E.S. Academy Coordinator, emphasizes. “It gives our community members the opportunity to enroll their students in a hands-on learning experience that builds their skills, interests and confidence levels.”
Another aspect of the Jaguar experience is our athletics! After undergoing a comprehensive search, Southwestern College found an experienced collegiate coach from the university ranks in Oscar Rodriguez, Jr. He comes to SWC after spending the past two years on staff at the University of Kansas, a NCAA Division I college.
“Oscar’s vision for the future of the program is convincingly bold. Jaguar football needs revitalization, and Oscar’s proven ability to coach and develop young men, talent to evaluate and drive to relentlessly recruit are some of his greatest strengths,” said Ron Valenzuela, SWC Athletic Director.
Oscar’s lifelong dream to become a head coach was realized when he found the following three things at SWC: investment in resources and facilities, alignment with the administration, and a rich area for local talent. He has the ability to also connect SWC players with resources and connections to thrive. Go Jaguars!
As we embark on these initiatives, let’s work together to create a future where education is for everyone – no matter their background or situation. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to Southwestern College. I look forward to celebrating these milestones with you and to the countless opportunities that are ahead.
Dr. Mark Sanchez is Superintendent/President of Southwestern College.
Though I commend the college for its excellent work in many areas, Dr. Sanchez paints a picture of achievements that must be grounded in reality.
Dual Enrollment:
The Dual Enrollment program between Southwestern College (SWC) and the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) is nearly nonexistent compared to the program that exists between the San Diego Community College District and the San Diego City School District. Only a handful of SWC courses grant high school students credit for high school and college requirements, whereas our neighboring community college district offers hundreds of courses.
There has been no progress in expanding the number of courses that articulate between SWC and SUHSD under Dr. Sanchez.
Transfer Fair:
The overrepresentation of private institutions participating in the upcoming Transfer Fair has significant financial implications for our students. These institutions often have higher tuition costs, which can lead to underrepresented students taking out substantial loans after exhausting their financial aid. Additionally, the reputation of for-profit colleges and private universities for targeting underrepresented students for financial aid and Veterans’ benefits is a serious concern.
Newly Hired Football Coach:
Revitalizing the football program does not empower SWC students to succeed. Allocating funds to sports rather than academics is a misguided proposition for most colleges. Statistics show that many schools lose millions yearly in sports operations, and fewer than 20 collegiate athletic programs in this country make money. SWC is not one of them.
