Eastlake’s Miessner races up, commands respect on the course

Eastlake sophomore Patricia Miessner finished second among Division I senior girls at last Saturday’s Mt. Carmel/ASICS Invitational at Morley Field with a time of 15:23.5 on the 2.7-mile course.

Miessner, who is only a sophomore, competed up in the senior division. She finished second to Martin Luther King’s Lauren Peurifoy, who timed 14:46.8 on the course. San Marcos’ Caitlin Cornell finished third in 15:34.5.

The next Eastlake runner, Lucy Bailey, finished 27th in 18:24.9.

“At about 2 miles, I started to cramp up, I was dying, but (other runners) pushing me from behind was good,” Miessner said in a media interview after the race. “It was a good win, to be sure. I was hoping for under 16, (but didn’t expect) to drop that much.

“This was a huge surprise, hopefully this is the norm but I don’t expect anything.”
