Six student-athletes from Eastlake High School’s track and field team qualified to compete in the chic Arcadia Invitational April 8-9.
That’s an impressive number, regardless of how they did — and they did well against some of the top performers in the state.
“We have a very talented group of seniors this year,” EHS coach David Koopman said. “We’re very senior heavy, which is good for the present. We’re loaded with a lot of experience.”
Senior Justin Cardoza finished third in the invitational flight at the Arcadia Invitational by clearing 6-7 in the boys high jump. Steele Canyon senior Leon Gillis matched the height but secured second place on fewer misses. Westlake senior Elias Gerald won the event at 6-9.
Cardoza’s season best is 6-8, set last Saturday at the Jaguar Invitational.
Senior Brandon Buu placed 12th in the invitational boys triple jump field at 44-8.75; he placed 11th in the open long jump field at 21-3.5. Buu’s season best in the triple jump is 45-1.5 at the Bronco Invitational on March 12 where he also set a season best mark in the long jump at 20-4.
Senior Jaden Boggs finished 11th in the rising stars flight in the boys triple jump at 41-9.5. His season best in the event is 42-7 at the Bronco Invitational and Willie Banks Invitational on April 2.
On the girls side, senior Macaria Moore-Bastide cleared 5-4 to place 12th in the invitational high jump. Her best on the season is 5-7 at the Bronco Invitational.
Senior Asja Mulic finished 17th in the girls open discus throw at 112-5. Her best on the season is 117-5 at the Bronco Invitational where she also notched a season-best mark of 34-1.25 in the shot put.
Senior Dominick Wright placed 13th in the boys open 400-meter dash in 49.61, a season best.
Otay Ranch senior Haydn Brotschi finished fourth in the seeded race in 48.47, a personal record.
Eastlake split a high-profile meet against visiting Otay Ranch on April 6 as both teams prepared for that weekend’s Arcadia Invitational.
Otay Ranch won the girls dual by two points, 69-67 — the Lady Mustangs’ first win over their neighborhood rival since 2012.
Otay Ranch sophomore Arynn Sanders doubled in winning the 200-meter dash (26.93) and 400 dash (1:00.73) while Lady Mustang classmate Diana Kostina doubled in winning the long jump (16-4) and triple jump (32-10).
Eastlake senior Gabriel Duron placed first in the boys dual meet won by the host Titans, 73-58, by clearing 11-0 while sophomore teammate Austin Michael was second with a personal record height of 10-0.
Duron, who also wrestles, called pole vaulting “relaxing” as compared to mat competition.
“You get to go at your own pace; there’s not a lot of stress as there is in wrestling where you’re up against an opponent in a must-win scenario,” Duron said.
Athletes compete as much against themselves as against others in track and field sports.
“You see your progress from meet to meet,” he said.
“It’s very enjoyable,” Michael said. “You get the feeling of going higher and higher.”
