Eastlake moves into second place in Metro Conference girls field hockey standings

The Metro Conference girls field hockey standings appear to be coming into finer focus in the final stages of the 2015 season after visiting Eastlake nudged Bonita Vista from its hold on second place with a clutch 1-0 victory last Friday.

Britney Buu scored a first-half goal and Lady Titan goalkeeper Glo Hinojoa made six saves to secure the shutout victory.

“We’ve made improvement,” EHS coach Robert Blas said.  “We have freshmen, we have sophomores, we have juniors, we have first-year players. We’re young and learning but it’s slowly improving.”

The goal was the first of her career for Buu. “I didn’t even know I scored it at first,” Buu somewhat shyly said. “Then when I went back to the other girls, they were all congratulating me.”

The Lady Titans improved to 7-4 in league play, 10-8-1 overall, after recording the win over the Lady Barons (5-4 in league, 9-8 overall).

Eastlake has one league game remaining on its schedule —Nov. 4 at Castle Park — and closes out its regular season schedule with a Nov. 6 game at Bishop’s.

Bonita Vista has three league games remaining on its schedule: Nov. 4 against visiting Otay Ranch, Nov. 6 at Chula Vista and Nov. 9 against visiting Castle Park.

The Lady Barons defeated Castle Park, 13-0, on Monday to rebound from last Friday’s setback.

Bonita Vista is currently third in the 24-team San Diego Section Division II power rankings, followed by Eastlake (sixth), Otay Ranch (eighth), Southwest (14th), Chula Vista (18th) and Castle Park (22nd).

Bointa Vista, Eastlake and Otay Ranch all look to be solid contenders for playoff berths.

Hilltop, which sits eighth overall in the Division I power rankings, continues to lead all Metro teams with its 9-0 first place league record. The Lady Lancers (14-4 overall) defeated visiting Bonita Vista, 1-0, in a key match-up on Oct. 28.

Jaelynn Kamanu scored the game-winning goal for Hilltop with the assist going to Cheyenne Pence. Vanessa Macias was credited with two saves to record the shutout win.
