Eastlake High School’s Ben Ramirez is about to take the next step in his baseball career – and it could be an exciting one.
Ramirez, a Second Team All-San Diego Section pick for the two-time consecutive San Diego Section CIF runner-up Titans, will take the field Saturday at Chicago’s iconic Wrigley Field to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game. It’s then back to San Diego to participate in the Perfect Game All-American Classic Aug. 14 at Petco Park.
“Can’t wait to get out there,” Ramirez tweeted after being added to the Perfect Game All-American Classic roster on July 13. “Appreciate the opportunity!”
Ramirez, whose primary position is shortstop, will be one of three San Diego County prep products at each national showcase event, joining Francis Parker’s Nick Allen and Torrey Pines’ Kyle Hurt, both incoming seniors.
Allen and Hurt were previously named to the Perfect Game event on June 28.
Saturday’s Under Armour All-America Game is set for a 1 p.m. start Pacific Time and will be broadcast by the MLB Network.
The elite event is part of a four-day showcase reserved for high school players who have proven to be some of this country’s rising stars. The event provides athletes with a one-in-a-lifetime experience that includes working with a top-notch coaching staff, a formal workout in front of Major League Baseball scouts, a home run derby contest and the game itself.
Since its inception in 2008, 71 Under Armour All-Americans have been selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. Thirty-eight former Under Armour All-Americans were selected in this year’s draft, including 11 in the first round. Since the game’s start, 250 Under Armour All-Americans have been selected in the MLB Draft.
Interestingly, all three San Diego County participants – Ramirez, Allen and Hurt – are poised to continue their baseball careers at the University of Souhern California. .
