A man driving to work on northbound 805 and Plaza Boulevard in National City late this morning said he was shot at by a man driving in another lane.
The incident was possibly the first in a series of shootings to occur this morning, according to National City Police Chief Adolfo Gonzalez.
Reports of shots fired at vehicles on the freeway stretched from the South bay to Mesa College Drive and then Del Mar Heights.
The victim in the National City incident was a 37-year-old black male who escaped uninjured and was the only person in his vehicle at the time.
He declined to state his name. He said he heard a “pop,” looked over and saw a man in a car with a gun.
He said he didn’t know why someone would shoot at him.
A bullet appeared to have entered through the driver side of the vehicle behind the door and pierced his luggage in the backseat.
In what authorities believe could be a related incident, a driver along Northbound I-805 near Mesa College Drive reported shots were fired at his car, according to NBC San Diego.
San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said the victim in that shooting was a 26-year-old black male, who was shot in the leg and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to 10 News.
Law enforcement authorities are looking for a white Chevy Malibu with a license plate of 5POM917. The plate is registered out of Lancaster, Calif.
10 News also reported that according to the San Diego Police Department, the vehicle may have been involved in a hit-and-run at San Ysidro Boulevard approximately 20 minutes before the shootings occurred.
The California Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation of today’s shooting incidents.
