Mr. Everything — er, Castle Park’s Jordan Danielson — more than made his presence felt in last Friday’s 35-34 double overtime victory at Mater Dei Catholic. The senior jack-of-all trades completed nine of 17 passing attempts for 269 yards and three touchdowns, rushed eight times for 40 yards and one touchdown, punted seven times for 123 yards, including a longest punt of 57 yards, returned one punt six yards and was five-for-five on extra-point conversions.
Danielson’s final PAT proved to be the game-winner.
“Jordan was captain of the ship,” CPHS head coach Hans Graham said. “He had an awesome game, awesome pass completions.”
Adrian Tolbert (five receptions, 220 yards) caught scoring passes of 91 and 67 yards as the visiting Trojans built a 14-10 halftime lead. But it took a fourth quarter scamper by Danielson to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
The teams traded touchdowns and PAT conversions in the first OT session. Elijza Johnson (11 rushes, 64 yards) scored on a run for Castle Park as the teams moved into a 28-all deadlock on the scoreboard.
With the Crusaders (2-4) up 34-28 to start the second overtime tie-breaker, Danielson passed to Luq Barcoo for the game-tying touchdown. The CP quarterback-turned- kicker then delivered the game-winning extra-point conversion.
“Tolbert had a clutch first-down catch for us in OT and then Jordan passed to Luq for the touchdown and we won with the PAT — it was real crazy,” said Graham, who earned honors as the Chargers Coach of the Week in the wake of the exciting marathon win.
The Trojans accumulated 540 all-purpose yards in the game — a key match-up of Division IV squads. “It was a giant win for us because we’re both in Division IV,” Graham noted. “The kids didn’t give up, we were down 21-14, it was the biggest win so far for me as a head coach. It was a crazy win. The bus ride home was cool, everyone was singing.”
Eagles fly past Mustangs, 37-30, in Metro-Mesa opener
Ed Galloway scored four touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving — to help spark the host Olympian Eagles (3-3) to a 37-30 homecoming victory against neighborhood rival Otay Ranch (4-3) in the Metro-Mesa League opener for both teams last Friday.
Galloway scored on runs of 34 and 67 yards and caught touchdown passes of 25 and 28 yards from quarterback Gary Cannon, who scored twice in the game on runs while passing for the two scores to Galloway. It was Cannon’s 20-yard TD scamper with 1:18 left that proved to be the game-clincher after an interception by Marcelo Knox-Iuli.
Dorsey Furlow scored twice for the Mustangs, who also got two touchdowns from receiver Adrian Rodriguez, including one on a spectacular 76-yard punt return. Galloway finished the game with 225 rushing yards and 316 all-purpose yards.
