If the Seattle Seahawks mimic what they did to start the 2013 NFL season, Mater Dei Catholic High School alumnus Jason Myers could be earning a trip to the Super Bowl.
The Seahawks defeated the host Miami Dolphins, 31-23, on Sunday to improve to 4-0 on the new season. The 4-0 start matches the team’s start to the 2013 season in which it won the Super Bowl over the Denver Broncos.
Seattle has scored 30 or more points in three of its four games this season and could be on a record pace for scoring.
Myers upped his 2020 statistics to 24 kicking points by splitting the uprights on a 55-yard field goal while tacking on four extra-point conversions in Sunday’s win.
On the season he is two-for-two in field goal attempts and 18-for-18 in extra-point conversions in his own perfect start to the season.
Myers has kept pace with quarterback Russell Wilson, whose 16 touchdown passes have tied an NFL record for most TD throws in four games to start a season.
Wilson tossed a pair of scoring passes in the win over Miami to complement his 360 passing yards in the game. Russell connected with David Moore (three catches, 95 yards) on an electrifying 57-yard scoring pass and hit Travis Homer on a three-yard TD pass.
In four games, Wilson has passed for 1,285 yards, an average of 321.25 per game. He leads the NFL with 16 scoring passes. Next up is Buffalo’s Josh Allen with 12 TD passes.
Wilson ranks second in the league with a 136.7 quarterback rating.
Myers hopes Wilson can stay hot as the Chula Vista native adds to his own scoring column.
Myers tallied 110 kicking points in each of his opening two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He set a career record with 129 kicking points during his one season (2018) with the New York Jets.
Myers has appeared in two NFL playoff games — both last season with Seattle.
Myers recorded four extra-point conversions in the Seahawks’ dramatic 38-31 come-from-behind win over the visiting Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 27.
Myers, a sixth-year pro, notched his four kicking points following touchdown completions by Wilson.
Wilson threw five more touchdown passes to hike his league leading total to 14 in three games while passing for 925 yards.
The game went back and forth all afternoon with five lead changes. The Seahawks rallied from a 9-9 first quarter tie to lead 23-15 at halftime. Seattle built its lead to 30-15 on Myer’s fourth PAT of the contest following a one-yard scoring pass from Wilson to Jacob Hollister.
But the Texas visitors scored 16 unanswered points to retake the lead. Dak Prescott connected with Cedrick Wilson (42 yards) and Michael Gallup (43 yards) on two long passing scores to narrow the score to 30-28.
Dallas took a 31-30 lead with 3:59 to play in the game on a 42-yard field goal by Greg Zurlein, who had opened scoring in the game on a 43-yard upright-splitter.
Wilson rounded out scoring with a 29-yard touchdown pass to D.K. Metcalf with 1:47 to play and then added a successful two-point conversion pass to Hollister to put his team in front by seven points.
Wilson, who was sacked four times, finished the game with 315 passing yards, including three scores to Tyler Lockett (nine catches, 100 yards).
Prescott, who was sacked twice, passed for 472 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. He leads the NFL with 1,690 passing yards in four games.
Extra points
Mount Miguel alumnus Cory Middleton recorded five tackles, including three solo stops, in the Raiders’ 36-20 loss at the New England Patriots on Sept. 27. He had his best single game showing on the season with seven tackles, including six solo stops, in Sunday’s 30-23 loss to the visiting Buffalo Bills.
In four games to start the season with the Raiders, Middleton has logged 22 tackles, including 15 unassisted tackles.
Castle Park alum Luq Barcoo remained on the inactive list for Jacksonville.
The NFL rookie out of San Diego State went undrafted but signed a free agent contract with the Jaguars. Barcoo earned All-American honors as an Aztec.
