The Castle Park Trojans appear to be inching closer to the playoffs with each victory they rack up and last Friday’s 47-0 pasting of the visiting Rock Academy has to be a confidence-builder for the now 4-1 Chula Vista team. The Warriors came into the game at Swift Stadium undefeated in four starts. Included in the Rock Academy’s win column was a 34-27 non-league victory at Southwest on Sept. 17 to spoil the Raiders’ perfect start.
“The kids finally put a second half together,” CP coach Hans Graham said. “We went out with our game plan and executed both offensively and defensively. I couldn’t be more proud of our kids.”
The Trojans, who are eyeing a potential Division III berth in post-season play, scored in every quarter against their Division V foe.
Jamar Shelby scored three touchdowns, Paul Sierra scored twice, Tyron Eden scored once, Alfredo Rodriguez kicked a field goal and the CP defense collected a two-point safety to round out scoring by the hosts.
The Trojans led 26-0 at halftime after blitzing the Warriors (4-1) for 19 points in the second quarter.
Shelby rushed the ball 17 times for 209 yards, scoring on runs of 21, 12 and 33 yards. Sierra gained 125 yards on 11 carries and scored on runs of six and 42 yards. Eden, who rushed for 69 yards on four carries, scored on a five-yard run.
Rodriguez booted a 37-yard field goal while Jose Figueroa tacked on six PAT conversions.
Quarterback John Hernandez completed four of seven passing attempts for 61 yards, including three passes to Stacy Lambert totaling 43 yards.
Nicolas Martinez and Johnny Mejia each recorded sacks for the victors, who held Rock Academy signal-caller Jay Dutra to 80 passing yards (with one interception) and minus-3 rushing yards.
The Trojans put their modest two-game winning streak to the test Friday against visiting Chula Vista (1-4). The Spartans are coming off a 49-7 loss at Mira Mesa and have lost their last three games after defeating Sweetwater, 42-12, on Sept. 10.
For CP, Shelby has now rushed for 651 yards and seven touchdowns; Sierra has rushed for 549 yards and scored eight times.
