Cox recognized for service

The city of Chula Vista recognized Supervisor Greg Cox at its City Council meeting on Nov. 3, presenting Cox with a proclamation declaring Friday, Nov. 6, as Supervisor Greg Cox Day in the city of Chula Vista.

Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said Cox has been in public office for 49 years, serving the people of Chula Vista and South Bay as a city council person, mayor and county supervisor. She said the proclamation touches on what Cox has done for the community.
Cox began his public service career as a teacher in Sweetwater Union High School District in 1971 and was first elected to the City Council in 1976. Cox was elected mayor of Chula Vista in 1981, serving two terms. In 1995, Cox was elected to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, representing more than 630,000 residents. Casillas Salas said Cox has been a “tireless champion” for South County.

“It’s really bittersweet,” said Casillas Salas. “It seems to me in every conscience wick of my political awareness you have always been someone who has served our public … it is really a remarkable career. And your work will continue for years to come, Supervisor Cox.”

Directly following the proclamation, the council unanimously approved the consideration of renaming the Otay Valley regional bike skills park Greg Cox Park.

The 3.2-acre bike skills park facility is located in Otay Valley Regional Park, Recreation Area 6. The City Council authorized staff to undertake additional actions and seek additional approvals that may be necessary to rename the park.

“The Otay Valley Regional Park is going to be a real gem for Chula Vista and the South County region,” said Cox. “The bike park is another example of the collaboration that the city has become notorious for.”

Cox said that in spite of the fact he is leaving Jan. 4, 2021, he has 61 days, 18 hours, 19 minutes and 57 seconds left and he will spend every second of it trying to get some of the South Bay projects completed.

“I sincerely thank you for this recognition, for this naming, and the opportunity to work with each and every one of you,” said Cox.
