Court date set for man accused of having child porn

A Chula Vista man who once worked as an Otay Mesa substitute teacher will get a trial date set on Sept. 21 on a federal charge that alleges he possessed and distributed child pornography on his computer.

Alejandro Castillo, Jr., 35, appeared last week before U.S. District Court Judge Michael Anello, who set the Sept. 21 hearing.

Castillo remains in the Metropolitan Correctional Center without bail after U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Crawford ordered him detained following his April 21 arrest. She wrote the visual depiction of minors in sex acts on Castillo’s computer involved violence against children.

Crawford also wrote that Castillo’s “prior purposeful access to minors through employment/volunteer activities as a teacher and camp counselor” were reasons to not grant bail. Castillo also had an insufficient bond proposal.

Castillo worked as a substitute teacher at Los Altos Elementary School in Otay Mesa and the principal sent parents letters informing them of his arrest.

Court records say Homeland Security began an investigation after discovering Castillo had shared videos online with someone.

They asked Cox Communications to disclose the name of the account with the Internet connection and they served a search warrant to seize his computer.

Castillo has pleaded not guilty.
