Southwestern College administrators and representatives of the college’s newspaper announced today they are collaborating to resume production of the Sun.
“Working together, the Administration, the advisor of the Southwestern College Sun and its editorial board are seeking a way to continue printing the college newspaper. The Administration and Sun have identified measures that could allow the paper to be printed until a long-term agreement can be reached. Southwestern College is proud of the Sun’s track record of award-winning journalism and student excellence,” the college said in a prepared statement.
On Thursday members of the Sun’s editorial staff said administrators told them they could not publish the print edition of the newspaper, citing concerns over printing costs.
However, some Sun staffers said they believed the college was trying to silence the newspaper before November, when new members of the college’s governing board will be elected.
Administration officials said the action was merely an effort to have the newspaper comply with a competitive bidding requirement.
