CIF girls volleyball playoffs start up for 13 South County teams

The San Diego Section girls volleyball playoffs started up Tuesday and Wednesday with first-round play in six divisions for 13 local South County schools.

Teams earning seeds in this year’s seven-division postseason field included Metro-Mesa League champion Eastlake (No. 2 in Division I), Metro-Mesa League runner-up Otay Ranch (No. 5 in Division I), Mater Dei Catholic (No. 13 in Division II), Chula Vista Learning Community Charter (No. 8 in Division III), Metro-South Bay League champion Olympian (No. 11 in Division III), Sweetwater (No. 8 in Division IV), Montgomery (No. 13 in Division IV), Mar Vista (No. 15 in Division IV), Metro-Pacific League champion Southwest (No. 1 in Division V), Metro-Pacific League runner-up San Ysidro (No. 3 in Division V), Castle Park (No. 8 in Division V), Chula Vista (No. 10 in Division V) and San Diego Academy (No. 10 in Division V-AA).

Eastlake (3-0 over No. 15 Vista) and Otay Ranch (3-0 over No. 12 La Jolla) both emerged with wins in Tuesday’s opening round in Division I while Olympian upset sixth-seeded Escondido 25-21, 25-22, 10-25, 25-18 in Division III. CVLCC dropped a 3-0 sweep at No. 9 West Hills 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 while San Diego Academy (4-17) ended its season with a 3-0 loss at seventh-seeded Borrego Springs (10-15) in Division V-AA.

The Lady Titans (23-11) won 25-13, 25-15, 25-12 while the Lady Mustangs (21-10) swept by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-9.

Olympian improved to 15-20 with the 3-1 playoff win (25-212, 25-22, 10-25, 25-18) at Escondido.

In quarterfinal games on Friday, Eastlake will host 10th-seeded Pacific Ridge (18-18) while Otay Ranch will play at fourth-seeded El Capitan (18-11). Pacific Ridge upset seventh-seeded Carlsbad (19-12) 25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 18-25, 15-11 to extend its season while the Lady Vaqueros (8-0 in Grossmont Hills League play) eliminated 13th-seeded Santa Fe Christian (9-18) in a sweep 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.

In opening-round match-ups on Wednesday, Castle Park defeated No. 9 Palo Verde Valley, 3-2, in a marathon five-setter 22-25, 25-16, 12-25, 28-26, 15-11 while High Tech High Chula Vista swept No. 11 Morse 3-0.

In road match-ups:

Mater Dei Catholic upset No. 4 Rancho Buena Vista 25-16, 25-13, 25-13 while Sweetwater swept No. 9 Liberty Charter 25-12, 25-11, 25-21. Montgomery lost 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-21) at No. 4 Canyon Hills while Mar Vista fell 25-10, 25-28, 25-18 in a sweep at No. 2 High Tech High Mesa). Chula Vista lost 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-12) at No. 7 O’Farrell Charter.

Southwest and San Ysidro both received byes to Saturday’s Division V quarterfinals. Southwest (13-16) will host Castle Park (14-17) and while San Ysidro (20-13) will host High Tech High Chula Vista (17-16).

Mater Dei Catholic (20-14) will play at No. 5 University City (21-8) in Saturday’s quarterfinals while Sweetwater 16-16) will play at No. 1 Lincoln (24-7).
