Eastlake defeated La Costa Canyon, 43-23, to win last year’s San Diego Section Division I girls basketball championship. With nine returners — four of them starters — off last year’s CIF championship team.
It appears the Lady Titans are a team to watch again this season after winning the Matador Classic championship in early December and capturing the WNBA Division title at the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic over winter break.
The Lady Titans won their Mesa League opener in commanding fashion by defeating visiting Montgomery, 73-13, last Friday behind all-league standouts Olivia Klugg, Maya Robinson and Haylee Owen.
Klugg scored 20 points and Owen dropped in 14 points to lead the Lady Titans while Ysenia Smith added 12 points and Robinson contributed 10 points in the win.
Robinson and Klugg led Eastlake with five rebounds each while Klugg had seven assists. Owen led the team with six steals while Smith had five steals.
The Lady Titans improved to 10-6 overall, 1-0 in league play.
Of note, Eastlake has been the only team thus far to defeat Bishop’s (15-1). That came in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic by a score of 73-68.
The teams met in a rematch in non-league play on Jan. 7, with the Lady Knights winning 70-65.
Robinson leads Eastlake in season scoring with 12.5 points per game, followed by Klugg with 11.6 points per game and Owen with 10.7 points per game.
Klugg leads the Lady Titans with 118 rebounds while Owen leads the team with 76 assists. Smith leads the team with 45 steals.
Eastlake finished 26-7 last year, including a season-ending 47-38 loss to visiting Lakeside (Lake Elsinore) in the opening round of the Southern California regional playoffs.
Lakeside went on to finish second in the state championship game.
