Chula Vista hosts ADU building workshop

The City of Chula Vista is offering free workshops to the community on what is required to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit on their properties.

“As the demand for affordable housing solutions rises, ADUs have emerged as a practical way to address shortages and affordability and provide flexible living arrangements. ADUs are commonly known as secondary units, in-law units, granny flats or backyard cottages.”

To make it easier to develop an ADU, the city worked with local ADU design build-firm SnapADU to create a collection of a dozen City Standard ADU plans. Those interested in developing an ADU can choose from plans in a variety of styles, sizes, and configurations to suit diverse needs and preferences.

Learn more about these standard plans and get your ADU-related questions answered at the upcoming workshops:

• Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at Salt Creek Community Center, 2710 Otay Lakes Road
• Thursday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. at Loma Verde Community Center, 1420 Loma Lane (simultaneous Spanish translation available)
The City’s Standard ADU Plans make it easy for property owners, with features including:
• Code Compliance: Each plan has already passed the plan check process to ensure compliance with local building codes, minimizing delays and uncertainties.
• Design Versatility: The plans offer flexibility and customization to allow for variations in exterior materials as well as door and windows to express individual owners’ tastes and respect
community character.
• Time and Cost Savings: Property owners can expedite the design and permitting timeline and reduce preconstruction costs.
