The Chula Vista City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution in support of accountability for the violent attack on the Capitol, condemning the assault on America’s democracy and condemning former President Donald Trump’s inciting violence as a political tool.
Council member John McCann recused himself from voting.
The resolution urges the United States Senate “to immediately convene a trial to hold Donald Trump accountable for his unlawful actions against the U.S. Constitution, with appropriate severe consequences if convicted.”
Mayor Mary Casillas Salas and Council member Stephan Padilla brought the resolution before council. Padilla drafted the language of the resolution.
Casillas Salas said the attack on Jan. 6 was abhorrent and an attack on democracy.
“I think all evidence points to the rhetoric of this president, not only on that day, but during his years of administration in fostering divisiveness within our country,” she said. “We cannot remain silent in the face of dishonesty.”
Council member Andrea Cardenas said federal representatives “must hold this president accountable and send a clear message to the world of who we are and what we stand for.”
