Celebrating the accomplishments of women and SWC’s resilience

As we step into the vibrant month of March, the college’s spring 2024 semester is in full swing.  Our enrollment has exceeded pre-pandemic levels, our PELL financial aid distribution to students has exceeded $30 million (largest amount of free financial aid distributed to students in the past 7 years) and we are developing amazing programs in service to our students and the South County.  Southwestern College is truly meeting its mission.

This month we also find ourselves immersed in the celebration of Women’s History Month.

It is a time to honor and recognize the extraordinary contributions women have made throughout history, shaping our world in profound ways. At Southwestern College (SWC), we are honored to have exceptional alumnae who continue to make significant strides in their respective fields, embodying the spirit of Women’s History Month.

Dennise Gurmilan

Among our remarkable alumnae, I am thrilled to highlight a few shining stars who are trailblazers in non-traditional fields, inspiring others to pursue their passions regardless of societal expectations.

Dennise Gurmilan, an Architecture & Planning Professional at the renowned global design and architecture firm, Gensler, found unwavering support from the SWC community, which inspired her to give back. She has created internship opportunities for SWC students and is mentoring the next generation of architects.

Anitra Willis

Anitra Willis, serving as the Director of Enrollment Management Technology Services at UC San Diego, credits SWC for igniting her passion for technology, leading her to a fulfilling technical career and various community initiatives. Willis’s advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry serves as a beacon of inspiration for underrepresented groups aspiring to enter STEM fields.

Roxanna Kennedy, the Chula Vista Chief of Police since 2016, is a testament to the transformative power of education. Her commitment to professional growth and community welfare extends beyond law enforcement, as she actively participates in various nonprofit organizations and international medical missions.

Roxanna Kennedy

Mary Casillas-Salas, a member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and former Mayor of Chula Vista, credits much of her career trajectory on the confidence earned through her time at the college, and exemplifies the spirit of civic engagement that we hold dear.

In line with celebrating our alumni, I am excited to announce the SWC Alumni Association launch networking mixer, March 7 at 5:30 p.m., at Novo Brazil located in the Otay Ranch Mall. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for all who have taken classes at Southwestern College to reconnect, reminisce, and forge new connections. Whether you graduated with

an associates degree or took a couple of classes, you are considered an alumni and we encourage you to join us for an evening of camaraderie and celebration.

Furthermore, the artistic talents of our alumni will take center stage at our Chula Vista campus Art Gallery, from March 14 through April 16. The Alumni Art Exhibit, open Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., showcases the creativity and diversity of our alumni artists. Best of all, the art show is free to the public.

For those seeking professional opportunities, mark your calendars for the SWC Job Fair on March 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Mayan Hall patio. This event serves as a bridge between our talented students and potential employers, fostering connections that can shape future careers. Bring your resume and dress for success. In the spirit of diversity and inclusion, we invite the community to join us on March 21 for the “Cesar Chavez Scholarship Breakfast” at the Chula Vista campus at 7 a.m. This event is a tribute to the legacy of Cesar Chavez, a champion of workers’ rights and social justice. Famed screenwriter and film director, Luis Valdez, will be our honorary speaker. It is an occasion to come together, celebrate, and support deserving students through scholarship opportunities. The event is open and free to the public.

As we navigate the month of March, let us not only celebrate the achievements of women but also acknowledge the collective strength and resilience of our Southwestern College community. Together, we continue to inspire and empower each other to reach new heights.

Dr. Mark Sanchez, Ed.D., is Superintendent/President of Southwestern College.
