March 13, 2017, will forever be a red-letter day in the Castle Park High School girls lacrosse program for it is the day the Lady Trojans recorded their first win in program history.
Castle Park defeated host Hoover, 2-1, in a non-league game on Monday for the history-making win.
The Lady Trojans completed their first year of play last year with a 0-17 record. Previously, Castle Park finished 0-15 in 2014 and 0-6 in 2015.
CPHS head coach Chris Kryjewski called the team’s ground-breaking win an “overall team victory.”
“To get this win for the program and the school is an awesome feeling,” Kryjewski said. “The team was so excited to the point like we had won CIF.
“The team truly has worked very hard to accomplish this goal. This was one of our goals for the season.”
Junior Emily Martinez scored the Lady Trojans’ first goal of the afternoon. However, it was junior Alia Gonzalez’s goal with five minutes remaining in the second half of the game that proved to be the game-winner.
Goalkeeper Aliyha Burgara had 15 saves to record the win.
Monday’s victory evened the Lady Trojans’ record at 1-1 on the season following a season-opening 22-0 non-league loss at UCSD Preuss on March 9.
Castle Park jumped right into Metro Conference play on Tuesday by absorbing a 19-0 setback to visiting Bonita Vista.
The Lady Trojans will host Otay Ranch Monday, March 20, at 5 p.m.
Otay Ranch is off to a 2-1 start following wins over Canyon Crest Academy (6-5 on March 9) and Hilltop (9-4 on Monday) and a loss to San Marcos (9-8 on March 6).
Kryjewski reports an increased turnout for this year’s team. He said the team is currently carrying 27 players on the roster — 15 on the varsity team and 12 on the junior varsity team.
