CANDIDATE MARCH TO CHULA VISTA CITY HALL

On March 5 Chula Vista voters will choose among a crowded field of city council candidates running for districts three and four. The Star-News will publish Q and A’s with candidates in the weeks leading up to election day.

What is your background and why are YOU running for Chula Vista City Council?

I’m a small business owner and educator. I’m a mom of three children, one special needs, and the wife of Reyes Gonzalez. We have been in the district for over 30 years. My children are Chula Vista High School graduates. I’m a graduate of Southwestern College. I’m a firm believer in the power of consistent betterment of our City through ethical leadership. And that is what I’m going to bring to the Fourth (4th) District.

What are your top three priorities as a council member and why?

• Local Control of Chula Vista issues:
• Public safety including police and fire.
•Infrastructure, including parks and recs, eliminate SR-125 tolls.
• Road potholes, graffiti, youth programs, sidewalks
• Fiscal responsibility
• Promote fiscal stability, predictability, and financial independence.
•Economic development
• Business expansion
• Work with Chamber of Commerce, SBEDC, and companies and small business
• Job retainment

What is District 4 excelling in and why?

• Small business formation development
• New restaurants and businesses
• Harborside Park political activism, Lauderbach Park soccer, Loma Verde Recreation Center
• Bayfront Development
• Homeless help and abatement
• Partly some of the policies are years in the making and others are people and resident centric in particular, business development.

What is District 4 lacking and what plans do you have to create solutions?

•Affordable housing: pushing for a City wide development of purchasing housing rather than expensive rentals; business attraction.
• More Green spaces.
• Training and Education Centers preparing our next generation.

What makes you the better candidate for City Council and why?

My 30-year investment in the district
Political, educational, business, and labor organizing experience and working with people.
Ethical leadership, no criminal activity or convictions, fair and generous treatment of people; active participant in civic life for the betterment of the 4th District in particular and Chula Vista in general.

What else would you like for voters to know about you?

It’s my second time running. As a fully bilingual Spanish speaker, it’s important to bring messaging and proper communication to the 4th District. I have had a warm reception in the 4th District. I have built a network of supporters and I have received several endorsements from many elected officials and local organizations.
I am a hardworking and committed mom, wife, and 30-year resident of the 4th District. I listen and respond to the needs of our community. Being of service to my community and city is one of my main goals. I have a proven track record of defending and speaking up for District 4.
