Bonita Vista’s Julissa Arzave will embark on her third trip to the state swimming championship meet this weekend as the Metro Conference’s sole representative at the elite competition.

The meet will take place Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19, at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex at Clovis West High School in Clovis.

Arzave qualified in the girls 500-yard freestyle event after posting a meet-winning time of 4:56.30 at last Saturday’s San Diego Section Division I championship meet at Granite Hills High School.

This will be the third time that Arzave will compete in the 500 distance at the state meet.

She placed 13th in the event last year with a time of 4:56.52 after recording a 16th-place finish at the state meet as a freshman. She timed 4:55.14 in the prelims last year to qualify to the B-final.

She enters this year’s meet with the 10th best qualifying time in the state.

Arzave finished third in the 200 freestyle event at last weekend’s Division I finals with a time of 1:54.22 to qualify as an alternate at this year’s state meet.

She competed in the 200 freestyle event at the 2017 state meet, placing 16th in 1:53.13 after posting a 1:52.49 prelim time.

The BVHS distance swimmer won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the Mesa League championship meet on May 5, timing 1:54.59 in the shorter distance and 5:03.68 in the longer distance.

Arzave’s achievement is not lost on anyone at Bonita Vista High School.

“Julissa making state finals as a ninth, 10th, and 11th grader is an absolutely amazing achievement. I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish as a 12th grader,” BVHS athletic director Jason Murphy said. “Not only is she a phenomenal swimmer, she is an excellent student and person. Carrying a 4.3 GPA taking IB and AP classes all while training at the highest level is everything we could hope a student-athlete would embody at Bonita Vista High School.”

This is the fourth annual state swim/dive championship meet.

Diving competition will take place Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m., in the boys field and Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m., in the girls field.

The state swim prelims are scheduled to take place Friday, starting at 2:30 p.m., followed by the finals on Saturday, starting at 2:30 p.m.

State of mind
