Skies are typically blue in Chula Vista and one business is doing their part to make sure they stay that way. For Allied Waste Services of Chula Vista, April marks the dedication of their new compressed natural gas fueling system and 20 new CNG trucks. CNG is a fossil fuel substitute for gasoline, diesel or propane. It is a cleaner burning substitute for traditional fuel sources and is much safer in the event of a spill. These 20 trucks are only the beginning for the fleet and as older vehicles are retired they will be replaced with the CNG trucks until the whole fleet is converted. Those trucks which are not yet CNG will continue to use biodiesel as they have in the past. Biodiesel is a plant-based renewable diesel substitute which offers reduced emissions when burned. If you have ever wondered where biodiesel comes from, you can look no further than your curb as the cooking oil Chula Vista residents recycle is a component of the fuel source. Oil collected is transported to a local company which produces biodiesel, offering a closed loop recycling system as the ingredients and product remain right in our local area. So look to that beautiful blue sky and take a deep breath.
