After opening the season playing a brutally tough schedule, it was a bit difficult to get an accurate bead on just how good the Bonita Vista High School football team is this season. It turns out the Barons are pretty good.
Bonita Vista dealt the visiting Chula Vista Spartans a 41-3 defeat at Southwestern College Friday night to highlight the Barons’ annual homecoming game. While somewhat slow starters, the hosts proved fast finishers in grabbing their opening Mesa League contest.
The Barons overturned an early 3-0 Spartan lead with four touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter to lead 31-3 at halftime.
It was a big turnaround from last week’s 42-0 beat-down loss at top 10-ranked Helix.
“If you want to win league, you’ve got to win that first one,” BVHS coach Chris Thompson said. “We had some amazing performances tonight. Look what happens when our receivers catch the ball.”
Baron quarterback Anthony Posada connected with Ethan Williams and Keenan Ellis on touchdown passes in the Barons’ 31-point second quarter explosion while Barrington Miller and Willis Faalogo each scored on touchdown runs and Lloyd Alexander booted a 25-yard field goal.
An interception and a fumble recovery both set up BVHS scores.
The night, which featured a huge crowd cheering on the home team, simply belonged to the Barons.
Chula Vista recovered an onside kick to start the second half but Atoa Fox promptly intercepted Spartan quarterback Mario Cabada on the next play.
Chris Boguille scored on a three-yard run and Alexander nailed a 37-yard field goal for the only points of the third quarter and a 41-3 BV lead.
The fourth quarter featured a running clock.
Bonita Vista improved to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in Metro-Mesa League play, while Chula Vista dropped to 2-5, 0-1 in league play.
The Barons will host the Olympian Eagles on Nov. 7 in their next home game, but before that, will play key road league match-ups at Otay Ranch (Oct. 17) and Eastlake (Oct. 24). Otay Ranch is 0-1 in Metro-Mesa League play, 4-3 overall, after dropping a closely-fought 37-30 decision at Olympian, also on Friday.
Chula Vista will host top 10-ranked Eastlake on Oct. 17. The Titans had a bye to open league play.
