Julio Alcala entered the 2011 high school football season with an eight-year record of 35-47-1 at Montgomery High School. It remains that, at least for the present, after Alcala stepped down as the Aztecs head coach a week before the season began to assume duties as the Otay Mesa school’s assistant principal.
Gary Harris, an assistant coach in the MOH program for the last 13 years, was elevated to the head coaching position. The Aztecs wasted little time in rewarding their new sideline boss with a victory after defeating the visiting Central Union Spartans, 40-6, in last Friday’s season opening game for both teams.
Charles Williams scored on the first offensive play of the season to get the Aztecs rolling by taking a hand-off and rushing 45 yards to the end zone. The score was the first of three touchdowns on the night for Williams, who gained 178 yards in the non-league contest.
Williams also scored on runs of 80 and seven yards as the Aztecs collected 226 rushing yards in the game.
Joel Castro scored on a two-yard run while Miguel Rodriguez scored on a three-yard run and Tony Aviles returned an intercepted pass 35 yards for the team’s final touchdown.
Montgomery defense had five picks in the game, including two each by Robert Smith and Ernie Lopez.
“It was a great way to open the season,” said Alcala, who will continue to help out the football team on game days as the coaching transition is completed.
The Aztecs (1-0) host El Cajon Valley (0-1) on Friday in the quest for a 2-0 start to both the new season and a new era under Harris.
