An Aug. 17 preliminary hearing has been set for a woman charged with murder in a so-called “road rage” incident in National City that claimed the life of a Navy man on his motorcycle May 28.
Darla Renee Jackson, 25, of Imperial Beach, cried and shook during her arraignment last week in Chula Vista Superior Court in the death of Zacharias Edward Buob, 39, who was stationed at Coronado.
Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said June 9 that the crash occurred on state Route 54 and Jackson chased the victim crossing all lanes of traffic and pushed his motorcycle some 300 feet. Buob was run over at 5:30 p.m. and he died at a hospital.
Evans said it was reported that both Jackson and Buob got into “a back and forth (traffic) altercation.” Buob reportedly kicked Jackson’s car, which allegedly enraged Jackson before she struck his motorcycle.
Some motorcycle riding associates of the victim showed up at the June 2 arraignment, but only a few could attend due to the size of the courtroom. Several reporters served as pool reporters because not all of the media could get inside.
Bail was set at $1 million and Jackson remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility. She pleaded not guilty.
Buob enlisted in the Navy 20 years ago and served as a special warfare combatant-craft crewman, according to his obituary. He is survived by his parents, sister, brother-in-law, and a niece. His funeral was in San Jose.
