Voters in County Board of Supervisors District 1 have seen a wide selection of candidates narrowed.
Democrat Paloma Aguirre, mayor of Imperial beach, and Republican John McCann appear headed to a July runoff to fill the seat left vacant by former District 1 Supervisor Nora Vargas.
McCann is the current mayor of Chula Vista in his second four-year term.
With nearly 60,000 votes counted Thursday morning, McCann had a significant lead over Aguirre, gathering 24,901 votes to her 18,070.
Aguirre has made the cleanup of Mexican sewage spilling into and contaminating South County waterways a central theme of her campaign.
McCann says he wants to continue supporting law enforcement and ridding public streets of the homeless.
Other candidates who ran but did not advance to the summer runoff are: San Diego City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno, Chula Vista Councilwoman Carolina Chavez, business owner Luis Fuentes, energy consultant Elizabeth Efird, and perennial candidate Lincoln Pickard.
The runoff election is July 1.
