A would-be carjacker who was also charged with attempted murder in which a woman was cut with metal spikes on Paradise Valley Road has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial and committed to a state mental hospital.
Criminal proceedings are suspended against Jesse Alan Gutierrez, 46, and he will be treated with medication at Patton State Hospital in an order by San Diego Superior Court Judge Joseph Brannigan. If Gutierrez regains his mental competency, he will be returned for trial.
A San Diego Police detective testified in a March 17 preliminary hearing that Gutierrez told him he heard voices telling him “to kill and destroy.” The detective said Gutierrez referred to himself as both God and Satan.
The woman and several other witnesses testified about an Oct. 26, 2013 encounter with Gutierrez around 5:30 a.m. while she was walking towards her workplace. She said the man demanded her car keys before she was cut in the neck with an object with metal spikes.
The woman did not surrender her car keys and was later taken to a hospital. She had just parked her car on Paradise Valley Round south of Woodman Street when Gutierrez approached her.
