A motorist was sentenced Jan. 6 to two years in state prison for driving under the influence of a pain medication and seriously injuring a 14-year-old boy who was struck while sitting at a bus stop bench at 6:50 a.m. in National City Aug. 19, 2010.
Carlos Manuel Aguilar, 35, of San Diego, was not supposed to be driving while taking a pain medication, which was a controlled substance, said Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright.
Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Timothy Walsh fined him $400 and gave Aguilar credit for serving 211 days in jail.
The boy, a sophomore at Sweetwater High School, was seriously injured and suffered fractures to his pelvis, leg and clavicle, and had go through extensive dental work. He had to be home schooled for many months, said the prosecutor, because he could not attend school due to his injuries.
Aguilar was driving a Jeep Cherokee which swerved and ran up a curb before striking the teenager on the bus bench. The student was pinned under the car and firefighters had to free him. Aguilar pleaded guilty in December and agreed to accept the two-year prison term.
