The Metro Conference wrestling championship tournament is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 14, at Mar Vista High School. Who will take home the championship medals?
Local mat men offered a preview during final regular season tournaments last weekend. The annual Robert Jenkins Memorial tournament at Mt. Miguel High School provided competition for 31 schools while the annual South Bay Invitational at Otay Ranch High School featured wrestlers from 22 varsity teams, plus 11 B-squads.
Metro grapplers put on a collective showcase at the latter event, with 11 South County wrestlers advancing to the championship finals and seven walking off the mat with championship titles.
Otay Ranch senior Dylan Costello (140 pounds) earned honors as the Outstanding Lower Weight wrestler while Eastlake senior Ronnie Sallee (197 pounds) captured the Outstanding Upper Weight award.
Costello finished 4-0 on the mat with two pins. He pinned Valhalla’s Karl King in 5:58 in the championship round.
Sallee was simply dominant with three first-period pins in as many trips to the mat. Sallee pinned Montgomery’s Chase Riegg in 1:53 in the finals. Sallee won his quarterfinal mat by a 1:58 fall and pinned Clairemont’s Nick Hascall in 1:16 in the semifinals.
Sallee enters post-season competition ranked among the top four in his weight class in the section as a state-qualifying contender. He suggested trying to hold anything back at this point of the season is not advisable.
“You’ve got to take each match as if it were your last,” the EHS standout said. “You wrestle one match at a time. It’s more mental than physical.”
Costello has been preparing for this moment for four years. He finished 5-0 in Mesa League dual competition and enters this weekend’s Metro championship tournament braced by a 30-4 record.
“My goal is to make it to state, and it’s been my goal for four years, but this is the first year where everything has really fallen into place for me,” Costello said.
Eastlake won the team title with 165.5 points – 18.5 points more than runner-up Otay Ranch. The second place Mustangs had three individual weight class champions. Joining Costello atop the awards stand with championship medals were teammates Kristian Aguirre (162) and Mustafa Farha (222).
Aguirre recorded two second-period pins to win his weight class. He pinned Clairemont’s Josue Guerrero in 3:10 in the championship round.
Farha, who finished 3-0 with two minor decisions and an 18-second pin in the semifinals, out-pointed Montgomery’s Miguel Ballesteros, 10-4, in the finals.
Ballesteros is a reigning Metro champion and captured the OW Upper Weight award at last year’s conference finals.
Other Metro mat men to claim weight class titles at last weekend’s South Bay Invitational included Bonita Vista’s Joe Babauta (122), Hilltop’s Alberto Garcia (134) and Chula Vista’s Ramon Delgado (287).
Babauta captured an exciting 7-5 overtime decision from Oceanside’s Joseph Sosa while Garcia scored a 13-0 major decision over University City’s Mo Abeid.
A trio of Montgomery wrestlers finished with runner-up medals: Andrew Jaffe (147), Riegg and Ballesteros. Mater Dei Catholic’s Ivan Duran finished second in his 184-pound weight class.
