The San Diego Section released its winter sports all-section teams March 28, followed by a winter sports recognition gala at the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum broadcast April 2 on KUSI-TV.
It was a star-studded 2014-15 winter sports campaign for several prominent South County student-athletes and teams, most notable among them Chula Vista senior forward/midfielder Isai Aguila, who was named the San Diego Section boys soccer player of the year.
Aguila helped lead the two-time defending Metro-Pacific League champion Spartans (19-2-7) to this year’s Southern California regional championship title — the first in school history. He finished the season with 13 goals and 15 assists.
Eight South County players overall were honored on this year’s all-section boys soccer team, including three from Chula Vista.
Senior forward/midfielder Giovanni Garcia received All-CIF First Team recognition while senior goalkeeper David Loya earned All-CIF Second Team honors.
Garcia led the Spartans on the season with 18 goals. Loya posted shutout performances in regional playoff matches at El Toro and Clovis Buchanan.
Hilltop senior goalkeeper Abner Alatorre also received All-CIF First Team recognition. In 19 games for the Lancers (8-8-7), Alatorre posted a 0.6 goals-against average.
Mater Dei Catholic senior Alonso Garcia, Otay Ranch senior Esteban Lopez, Bonita Vista senior Chon Hampson-Medina and San Ysidro senior Pedro Puentes all received All-CIF Second Team honors.
Puentes helped lead San Ysidro to its second consecutive section championship after the Cougars (15-3-4) defeated La Jolla Country Day, 1-0, to win this year’s Division III title.
Garcia helped lead the Crusaders (11-6-5) to a runner-up finish in the section’s Division II championship game while Hampson-Medina helped guide Bonita Vista (13-7-6) to a runner-up finish in the section’s Division IV championship game.
Girls soccer
Bonita Vista senior Pascale Dumesnil (First Team) and Lady Baron senior Amber White both earned All-CIF recognition on the girls soccer all-section squad.
Dumesnil, the Metro-Mesa League Player of the Year, led Bonita Vista (13-6-2) with 87 shots despite missing six of her team’s games. She finished the season with seven goals and a team-leading 12 assists.
White posted a 0.3 GAA with five shutouts to buttress the Lady Barons’ defense.
Boys basketball
Two South County players earned placement on the All-CIF First Team: San Ysidro senior Lenard Stewart and Mater Dei Catholic sophomore Jaylen Hands.
Stewart paced Metro-South Bay League champion San Ysidro (16-13) with a 25.5 per game scoring average in helping the Cougars advance to the Division I playoffs.
Hands was among the prime driving forces in leading the Crusaders (18-11) to this year’s Metro-Mesa League co-championship title and a berth in the Division I quarterfinals.
Girls basketball
Mater Dei Catholic senior Kristina Sellona and Montgomery junior Murrellence Woodson both received recognition on the All-CIF Second Team.
Sellona led Metro-Mesa League co-champion Mater Dei Catholic (14-16) with a 16.1 per game scoring average.
Woodson led Metro-South Bay League champion and Division II runner-up Montgomery (24-8) with a 15.3 per game scoring average.
Boys wrestling
The Metro Conference posted four runner-up place-finishers at this year’s San Diego Masters state qualifying tournament, all securing All-CIF Second Team honors.
They included Olympian senior Bryan Sanchez (108 pounds), Olympian junior Dante Preciado (134 pounds), Mar Vista sophomore Aaron Olmos (147 pounds) and Olympian freshman Uriel Beristain (172 pounds).
Girls wrestling
Seven Metro Conference female wrestlers advanced to the championship round of this year’s section finals. Hilltop senior Alysia Baker won the 152-pound championship title while the other six recorded runner-up place-finishes.
Second Team All-CIF honors went to Hilltop freshman Jasmine Plasencia (103 pounds), Eastlake sophomores Elizabeth Hafen (123 pounds) and Grace Williams (128 pounds), Eastlake junior Aliyah McGuire (139 pounds), San Ysidro senior Jazmin Quintanilla (152 pounds) and Mar Vista sophomore Elycia Edwards (172 pounds).
