There is not much to dislike about Stomp, the percussive sensation that made its way back to San Diego after last performing here in 2007.
The show is loud. But mixed in with the bangs and booms is a creativity that is equally addictive and entertaining.
The show begins quietly with a single performer appearing on stage with a broom, dust flying everywhere. It doesn’t take long for the rhythm he develops from the simple act of sweeping to capture the audience’s approval and appreciation.
From brooms slammed together in perfect unison to the Zippo lighters quiet but equally mesmerizing flames flickering on and off like a dance, the show’s pace is dancelike as it moves from slow to fast, them slow, slow fast.
The audience isn’t expected to sit still and only and watch the performers, who rally the crowd into playing a charades meets “Simon says” kind of game. And while the show is generally safe for the entire family, there are moments when shy folks in the crowd may blush (like when performers simulate urinating from a kitchen sink or when they use foam tubing to emulate male anatomy.
Nevertheless, the cheeky antics shouldn’t stop anyone who likes tapping their feet and drumming their fingers from enjoying this buffet of choreography, mixed beats and rhythms that leaves even those with large appetites for fun satisfied.
