Daniel Garcia, 27, of Chula Vista, was sentenced April 8 to 29 years and eight months in state prison for killing a man in a South Bay motel room and using the victim’s credit cards in 2007.
A second man, Jorge Alberto Naranjo, 25, is also charged with murder and remains a fugitive.
Garcia pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter in the Oct. 24, 2007, slaying of Lee Woodard, 57, who died of asphyxiation.
Woodward was found with tape over his mouth, a pillowcase over his head, and his feet and hands were bound. His wallet and black 1999 Volkswagen Passat were missing.
Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Ana Espana imposed 11 years for manslaughter and added 10 years consecutively because Garcia admitted to using a gun in a homicide. She added one year for Garcia pleading guilty to stealing Woodard’s car, and numerous eight month sentences consecutively for his guilty pleas involving illegal use of the victim’s credit cards.
As for Naranjo, Deputy District Attorney Mike Przytulski said “he’s still at large.” A judge has issued a no-bail arrest warrant for Naranjo, who is a parolee and was described as someone who frequents the South Bay area.
