California District 42 Little League will crown its 2016 champions in the 10U, 11U and 12U divisions this weekend at the Sweetwater Valley Little League complex. Title games in all three divisions are scheduled Sunday between 10 a.m. and noon, with double-elimination games (if necessary) set for Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the same site.
The Junior League Division got the jump on the three other divisions by holding its best-of-three championship series June 29-30 at Eastlake Little League’s juniors field.
Eastlake Little League defeated Luckie Waller Little League 2-0 to sweep the series.
Eastlake now advances as the District 42 representative to compete in the California Section 7 championship tournament, which will be hosted by California District 66 Spring Valley Little League.
“It really was a true team effort,” Eastlake manager Tim Johnson explained. “The kids worked hard in this series, and worked hard all season.”
Eastlake opened the best-of-three series with a 14-1 win on June 29 and closed out the series with a 13-8 victory on June 30.
Winning pitchers for Eastlake included Dylan Baca (first game) and Quintin “Q” Johnson (second game).
In the first game, Eastlake received RBI from six players: Baca, Johnson, Xavier Ibañez, Josh Elwood, Luke Killeen and Tyler Tomlinson. Nine different players scored runs as Eastlake rapped out 14 hits and zipped out in front 10-0 on the scoreboard after two innings.
The second game featured a comeback victory for Eastlake.
“Luckie Waller had some good pitching and we were down by two runs in the first inning,” the elder Johnson explained. “We took advantage of one big inning to score a bunch of runs.”
Johnson said his team is now focused on the upcoming Section 7 championship tournament.
“Last year Eastlake’s Junior Division team went to the Section 7 tournament and lost its first two games,” the Eastlake manager noted. “We’re looking to reverse that, hopefully, and have a good showing.”
Spring Valley Little League is located at 1312 Sweetwater Lane Road, Spring Valley.
District 42 champion Eastlake will meet the District 22 champion in Saturday’s opener (2 p.m.), with the winner advancing to Sunday’s second-round winners bracket game against the District 41/District 66 winner (6:30 p.m.).
Challenger bracket elimination games are scheduled Sunday (2 p.m.) and Monday (6 p.m.).
There are no games on Tuesday due to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Petco Park.
Tournament play resumes Wednesday, July 13, at 6 p.m., with Sunday’s semifinal winner meeting the challenger bracket winner in the section championship game.
If a championship replay is required due to the double-elimination format, that game would be played Thursday, July 14, at 6 p.m.

Park View roars to earn berth in 12U District 42 Little League championship game
Could another team from California District 42 Little League be headed to South Williamsport? Certainly, the road to the Little League World Series goes through Sunday’s 12U Division championship game at Sweetwater Valley Little League.
Park View Little League batted its way to Sunday’s division final by winning its opening three games in the double-elimination tournament — all in runaway fashion.
Park View will face an as yet undermined opponent in Sunday’s title game. The 12U challenger bracket final is Saturday (July 9) at 1:30 p.m. at Eastlake Little League
Chula Vista American earned a berth in the challenger bracket final and will face either Eastlake or Sweetwater Valley.
Park View made district history by winning the 2009 Little League World Series championship, and one has to wonder if the league will be sending another team to do battle against the rest of the world in mid-August. Of course, it’s unfair to put the cart before the horse at this point, but it’s still fun to dare to dream – and that’s exactly what makes the Little League All-Star playoffs so compelling.
And, at this point, there’s certainly no reason to say that this year’s Park View All-Star team cannot follow in the footsteps of giants.
Park View opened the district playoffs by crushing Southwest Little League, 37-0, in a game played June 29. Park View then blasted Eastlake Little League, 21-2, in a second-round game played July 5.
On Friday (July 8), Park View topped Chula Vista American Little League, 15-4, to earn a berth in Sunday’s division final.
Bombs away
Park View slammed nine home runs in the 37-0 win over Southwest and followed that heavy-hitting performance by crushing five balls over the fence in the 21-2 win over Eastlake.
Adriel Colmenero, Ali Camarillo, Cachorro Lizarraga, Daniel Leon, Joshua Bruce, Ju Ju Padilla, Lucas Marrujo and Omar Cordero all hit round-trippers in the opening game. Camarillo homered twice and drove in a team co-leading five runs in the game (tying Padilla for top honors).
Colmenero and Marrujo each collected four RBI in the game while teammates Lizarraga, Leon, Bruce and Cordero each drove in three runs. Anthony Soto, who went five-for-six in the game with three doubles and a triple, had two RBI.
Camarillo also had a triple to go with his two homers. Camarillo and Colmenero each scored six runs.
In the win over Eastlake, Colmenero, Lizarraga, Devin Hinojosa, Padilla and Money Guevara all slammed pitches over the fence. Lizarraga, who went three-for-four at the plate, racked up five RBI to lead Park View in that department while Padilla (also three-for-four at the plate) drove in four runs. Colmenero, Camarillo, Hinojosa,
Guevara and Cordero each finished the game with two RBI.
Padilla, Marrujo and Cordero each scored three runs to lead Park View.
In the 15-4 win over Chula Vista American, Park View slammed four home runs to increase its total to 19 in three games. Marrujo, Cordero, Leon and Adam Amaro each belted home runs in the game. Marrujo finished three-for-three with three RBI and two runs scored while Colmenaro, Leon and Amaro each drove in two runs.
Park View rolled across five runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase an early 301 CV American lead and pushed across eight more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to add to a 7-4 lead.
Lizarraga scattered six hits in allowed four earned runs to pick up the win for Park View. He struck out 10 batters in the five-inning game while yielding just two walks.
Liazarraga threw 79 pitches – 58 of them strikes.
Staying alive
Eastlake defeated Southwest, 20-1, in a second-round challenge bracket game on July 7 to remain in contention. Sweetwater Valley topped Imperial Beach, 14-7, also on July 7 to keep its championship fortunes alive.
Eastlake and Sweetwater Valley were scheduled to meet in a third-round challenger bracket game Friday (July 8), with the winner advancing to Saturday’s challenger bracket final against Chula Vista American.
The challenger bracket final winner will meet Park View in Sunday’s district championship game.
