It will be an interesting finish to the season for the Olympian Eagles, who awarded head coach Gil Warren his 200th career victory with last Friday’s 28-7 non-league win against the visiting Sweetwater Red Devils. Warren, who won section titles at Castle Park in 1968, 1994 and 1996, is now 200-99-4 in all-time games as a head coach and is the seventh coach in section history to reach the 200-win milestone.
The legendary Herb Meyer, who coached at Oceanside and El Camino, leads the section with 338 victories.
The Eagles (2-3) scored one touchdown in each quarter against the Red Devils (1-4), who saw their losing streak reach four games following a season opening win against El Cajon Valley. Kevin Ehm scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter, followed by a four-yard run by Ian Autman in the second quarter, a six-yard interception return by Devon Flores in the third quarter and a four-yard pass to Sergio Bailey from Daniel Gutierrez in the final quarter.
Sweetwater scored its lone touchdown in the game in the fourth quarter.
Asante Gibson and Paul Padilla each had fumble recoveries to key the Olympian defense while Flores and Ehm each collected picks. Arturo Cuevas led the Eagles with 13 tackles.
Olympian hosts Del Norte (3-2) in a non-league match-up this Friday. The Nighthawks are coming off a 34-0 shutout victory against the Escondido Charter White Tigers.
Sweetwater will be out to try to break its losing streak against host Southwest, which stands 2-3 on the season following last Friday’s 20-19 non-league setback at Calipatria.
