October ushers in monstrous tales at the Chula Vista libraries

Not every city is lucky enough to have its own monster, but Chula Vista is home to a unique legend known to many residents across several generations as the Proctor Valley Monster.

In time for Halloween, the Chula Vista Public Library will host a series of special storytelling events called, “Tales of the Proctor Valley Monster.” The events will take place at all three branch library locations in October. The storytelling performances are presented by the Storytellers of San Diego, who will thrill audiences with eerie tales of the local legendary creature.

The Proctor Valley Monster is said to be a Bigfoot-type creature that roams the rural Proctor Valley Road area between Eastlake and Jamul. The monster is the most prominent of many spooky legends from Proctor Valley Road. The area has also inspired a broad range of other supernatural legends, including those of vanishing hitchhikers, ghostly apparitions, strange nighttime lights, UFOs, and even a “ghost car.” Tales of these legends will also be included as part of the storytelling performances.

The Library invites all ages to celebrate the rich local oral folklore of Chula Vista through these live storytelling performances. Explore the mysteries and discover the truth behind the many legends of Proctor Valley.

“Tales of the Proctor Valley Monster” will take place:
• Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Library, 365 F Street
• Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at the Otay Ranch Library, Otay Ranch Town Center, 2015 Birch Road, Suite 1103
• A special Spanish-language performance will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the South Chula Vista Library, 389 Orange Avenue

This project was made possible by the City of Chula Vista’s Performing and Visual Arts Grant and is one of 12 public arts projects funded by the program this year.
