The high school girls golf season is now in swing and that includes Sweetwater High School in National City.

The Lady Red Devils are hoping to find success in a rebuilding season, according to coach Mike Metzig.

“Sweetwater girls golf is returning two players and the rest are new to the sport,” said Metzig, who coached the boys team during the 2024 spring season. “Haven’t had the participation like this since 2018. With 14 players, our expectation is to learn the game of golf while getting one percent better every day. Our team goal is to get at least two golfers to qualify for CIF and also win the league championship.”

Top returners include juniors Alexis Tumang and Jhanessa Pecson. Impact newcomers include freshman Taelyn Smith, sophomores Atlakamani Magana, Breanna Miller and Kaelee Picazo and senior Mikayla Sirarath.

The 2024 fall season squared off Aug. 15 with a competitive match against Mira Mesa at Torrey Pines and followed with an Aug. 27 match against Southwest in the team’s South Bay League opener at the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course.

Sweetwater hosted San Ysidro Sept. 5 at its home course at the National City Municipal Golf Course, recording a victory.

The Lady Devils will engage league opponents either at the National City or Chula Vista golf courses. Sweetwater does have a non-league match against Helix on Sept. 20 at the Mission Trails course.

The South Bay League prelims are upcoming Oct. 16 and the league finals on Oct. 17.

League members include Castle Park, Montgomery, Mar Vista, San Ysidro, Southwest and Sweetwater high schools.

The San Diego Section team championship tournament finals are Nov. 6 at Torrey Pines North following Round One at a TBD site. League champions are guaranteed an entry berth in the CIF team competition.

The Southern California regional tournament follows Nov. 14 at Los Serranos North in Chino. The state championship event is Nov. 20 at the San Gabriel Golf Course.
