Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Downtown Chula Vista

Celebrate El Grito at the Memorial Bowl in downtown Chula Vista.

From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month invites us to honor and celebrate the rich contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the Latin American community. Downtown Chula Vista is ready to celebrate with local events, go-to shops to party your own way, and tasty restaurants to try Latin American and Mexican cuisine. All in all, the town has everything you need to embrace the community’s rich culture and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Gather for El Grito!
One of the most cherished events of the Chula Vista community is the El Grito celebration at the Memorial Bowl, nestled right in the heart of the neighborhood! On Sunday, September 15 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Mayor John McCann and the Consulate General of Mexico and the House of Mexico will come together to celebrate the 214 years of Mexican Independence. With an array of local street vendors, food, traditional observances, and lively entertainment, this event is one that will truly embrace hispanic cultural heritage and deepen the connections within the community.

A Look Ahead

Mark your calendars! Dia de los Muertos is right around the corner and the Downtown Chula Vista Association is welcoming you to celebrate! Taking place on Saturday, November 2, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the 4th Annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration promises a fun-filled day where friends and families can honor and celebrate departed loved ones with activities such as a community altar, an altar contest, Las Jefas market, live music, dance performances, a car show, kids activities, and more. At the heart of the community celebration is the community altar on Davidson St., where the public can display photos of deceased loved ones.
Similar to last year, the Downtown Chula Vista Association invites the community to participate in some friendly competitions. At the community event, there will be an altar building contest where participants are tasked with creating the best altar. Each display will be judged and voted on who had the best altar towards the end of the event, with special prizes at the end for those who win. It’s not too late to sign up yet so take on the challenge here.

Whether you’re in the neighborhood to take part in the various community events or support local Hispanic businesses, you’re guaranteed to have an enjoyable experience in Downtown Chula Vista!
