The Mar Vista High School football team has opened its season 5-1 for the first time in school history, and Mariner fans must wonder just what exciting things could be in store for their team before the season is finished.
Mar Vista ground out a tough 13-0 non-league victory at Montgomery last Friday to reach the milestone for best start in school history.
Jordan Lertique scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper in the second quarter and Ricardo Moriel booted field goals of 30 and 25 yards in the first and third quarters, respectively, to account for scoring in the game.
The Mariners racked up 258 rushing yards, led by Jimmie Hill (12 carries, 97 yards), Adrian Iriarte (eight carries, 48 yards), Kenny Nieves (five carries, 31 yards), Keevin Moore (five carries, 31 yards), Lertique (three carries, 31 yards) and Bennie Smith (two carries, 20 yards).
Mar Vista recorded five sacks in the game, including three by Lashon Riggins and two by Moore. Lertique led the team with 10 tackles while also making one interception.
Landon O’Connell had one pick for the Mariners, who also benefited from by fumble recovery by Junior Rodriguez.
Riggins and Moore each contributed seven tackles.
Charles Williams led Montgomery (4-2) with 115 rushing yards while quarterback Harley Armada passed for 31 yards, with both pass completions to Miguel Rodriguez. Williams also had two punt returns for 30 yards.
