With summer approaching and more San Diegans hitting the road, Project Clean Water, a county-wide plan dedicated to protecting water quality in the region, is launching a new initiative to keep cars and the environment clean. “From Suds to Shores: Wash Your Cars Wisely,” raises awareness and promotes responsible washing practices which minimize the amount of pollutants that enter waterways, along with reducing water use.
“Car washing is a serious contributor to water pollution. While it is necessary, it’s only problematic if done incorrectly. Our campaign educates the public on how to wash their cars responsibly to prevent harmful runoff,” said Ruth de la Rosa of Project Clean Water in a press release. “The dirty water from car washing can carry soap, chemicals, gasoline, heavy metals, and motor oil. This untreated water can flow directly into storm drains and subsequently into our waterways, degrading water quality and harming wildlife. Remember, only rainwater should enter streets and storm drains!”
The campaign promotes three environmentally friendly options for car washing:
Automated Car Wash: Choose automated car wash facilities that have eco-friendly cleaning solutions, water-saving techniques to minimize chemical runoff and reduce water consumption, and responsible wastewater management practices.
Wash it at Home: If going to a car wash is not an option, use biodegradable car wash products and only wash your car on permeable surfaces like grass to prevent harmful chemicals and pollutants from entering storm drains. Dispose of wash water responsibly by pouring it down your sink drain, where water is filtered before entering the wastewater treatment system.
Mobile Car Washing Services: Opt for mobile car wash services that use eco-friendly cleaning products and employ containment measures to capture and collect wastewater during washing.
