Lady Eagles, Mariners take flight to CIF girls volleyball title games

The Olympian High School girls volleyball team drew one step closer to realizing its goal of winning back-to-back San Diego Section championships after defeating visiting Mission Vista, 3-2, in Tuesday’s Division II semifinals.

The top-seeded Lady Eagles (25-10) will face second-seeded Valhalla (19-8) for the division title Saturday at Cathedral Catholic High School. Game time is 1:15 p.m.

Olympian won last year’s Division III championship in a history-making moment for the east side Chula Vista school. The Lady Eagles moved up to the Division II competition tier this year and, braced by 10 returners off last year’s championship team, appear not to have missed a step.

Olympian defeated fourth-seeded Mission Vista (24-11) by scores of 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 10-25, 15-11.

The Lady Eagles won the opening game before the Lady Timberwolves evened the match. The hosts then went up 2-1 in games before the visitors evened the score once again by rallying to win the fourth game. The fifth and deciding game proved highly competitive before Olympian pulled out the victory.

Alex Hightower led the Lady Eagles with 20 kills in the five-set victory while teammates Lauren Appelman and Briana Torres contributed 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Yvette Macias turned in 35 digs while Appelman had 26 digs, Hightower had 25 digs and Laurie Orbita had 18 digs.

Andrea Ramirez had 25 assists while Orbita had 21 assists.

Appelman leads Olympian with 363 kills while Hightower has 66 aces, Macias has 523 digs and Orbita has 474 assists.
Valhalla is also 3-0 in playoff competition after besting, in order, 15th-seeded Mission Hills in the opening round (3-0), seventh-seeded Granite Hills (3-2) in the quarterfinals and third-seeded Escondido (3-0) in the semifinals.

Maiya Lopez leads the Lady Norsemen with 260 kills and 47 aces while Rachel Kuhn has 311 digs and Brittney Beltz has 805 assists.

Eastlake wins clash of the Titans, advance to CIF girls volleyball semifinals

POINT LOMA, Nov. 14 — The Eastlake girls volleyball team has already captured one championship banner this season after winning the Metro-Mesa League title. Could the Lady Titans be on the way to capturing a second major sports banner?

Eastlake moved halfway along in that quest after upsetting fourth-seeded Point Loma, 3-0, in Saturday’s San Diego Section Division I quarterfinals. The fifth-seeded Lady Titans won by match scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.

The win was the sixth consecutive for the Lady Titans, who lost two months ago in a three-game sweep to these same Lady Pointers.

Wednesday’s semifinal match is a rematch of last year when La Costa Canyon eliminated Eastlake from title contention.

Kristen Abels led the Lady Titans against Point Loma with 11 kills. Jacqui Van Liefde contributed nine kills to Eastlake’s winning effort while Briana Ayon, who provided a stirring pre-game speech to her teammates, had four kills and three blocks. Audrey-Rose Hutchinson had three kills and five blocks while Anissa Vera turned in eight serving aces.

Madilyn Yeomans led the Lady Pointers with 10 kills while teammate Charlie Ekstrom had eight kills.
