I am delighted to connect with you and share some of the wonderful achievements and opportunities at Southwestern College. We are truly honored and grateful to serve the South San Diego County community, and this year, our commitment to excellence is evident in the remarkable accomplishments of our students and the exceptional quality of our programs.
For the 2023 – 2024 academic calendar, I am thrilled to announce that Southwestern awarded an impressive 2,886 degrees and certificates. This achievement underscores the dedication and hard work of our students, faculty, and staff. During our two commencement ceremonies, on May 24th, over 1,100 students walked the stage, marking an increase of over 200 graduates compared to 2023. Additionally, we are proud to host our second binational commencement ceremony on June 17 at Preparatoria Federal Lazaro Cardenas, where more than one hundred students will participate, and over 700 guests are expected – doubling last year’s student participation. This unique event highlights our strong cross-border collaboration and the opportunities available to our students.
Our programs continue to reach new heights, providing our students with unparalleled opportunities to excel and showcase their talents. Recently, 34 of our students from the auto tech, engineering, and business programs competed in the prestigious Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) race. As the only community college team in the nation, they competed against esteemed universities such as Cornell, Purdue, and SDSU. This accomplishment not only demonstrates the high caliber of our students but also the exceptional training and education they receive at Southwestern College.
Moreover, our Associate Nursing Program has been recognized for its excellence. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing has granted our program continuing accreditation through 2029, affirming the quality and rigor of our nursing education. This achievement ensures that our nursing students are well-prepared to meet the healthcare needs of our community with the highest standards of care.
Our architecture students have also made us proud by participating in the Transborder Association of Architecture Education (TAAE) World Design Capital (WDC) San Diego/Tijuana Pavilion Design Parallel Studio event on May 23 at CEART Tijuana. They presented two innovative projects, showcasing their creativity and ability to address cross-border design challenges. These experiences highlight the exceptional education available at Southwestern College, which is accessible to everyone in our community.
We are equally committed to fostering early educational experiences through our Youth Excellence and Success (Y.E.S.) Academy. This summer program for students from 4th to 12th grade provides a positive, early-on college experience where young learners can thrive by trying something new, acquiring new skills, and challenging themselves in a supportive college environment. The Y.E.S. Academy exemplifies our dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders and scholars.
Finally, on June 22, we invite you to explore the wide variety of classes, programs, and certificates available for the summer and fall terms at our Cruisin’ Into Southwestern College event at our Chula Vista campus. Programs and services like financial aid, admissions and registration, and counseling will be present. You can register on the spot! Plus, we will have a lowrider exhibit, music, food, and a fantastic family atmosphere.
We look forward to continuing to serve you and contributing to the growth and success of our vibrant community. Thank you for your unwavering support and for being an integral part of the Southwestern College family.
