Someone has to finish second. It’s an ego-buster and deflating emotionally, but only one team can finish first.
It’s a harsh reality that can’t be avoided.
The Bonita Vista Barons and Eastlake Titans boys water polo teams — braced by a combined roster of 23 seniors — felt the agony of defeat in Saturday’s San Diego Section championships at La Jolla High School. They also felt the sense of accomplishment.
The Barons were making their first final appearance since 1995; it was the first championship game appearance ever for the Titans (Eastlake High School opened in 1992).
“It feels good,” BVHS senior Ezekiel Flores explained. “We put in a lot of work to get here. We’re all a little disappointed with the (championship game) loss but we’re still happy with our season.”
