The Metro-Mesa League track and field championship meet is scheduled Thursday, May 2, at Otay Ranch High School, starting at 4 p.m. Prelims are Tuesday, April 30.
The Metro-South Bay League championship is scheduled the same dates at Mater Dei Catholic High School, starting at 3 p.m.
Junior varsity competition in both leagues is scheduled Saturday, April 27.
All nine lanes at Otay Ranch High School will be utilized for running events.
Metro-Mesa teams include Bonita Vista, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Olympian, Otay Ranch and Sweetwater
Metro-South Bay League teams include Castle Park, Hilltop, Mar Vista Mater Dei Catholic, Montgomery, San Ysidro and Southwest.
Road to state
The section’s divisional championships (Division I at Del Norte High School, Division II at University City High School and Division III at Valley Center High School) are scheduled Saturday, May 11, starting at 10 a.m.
The section’s state-qualifying meet follows May 18 at Mt. Carmel High School.
Besides able-bodied events, Para athletes also will be included.
Each divisional meet will include 27 entries in each of the 14 individual events and 18 entries in each of the three relay events. A selection committee will choose the best entries.
Each league/conference will receive one automatic entry – the league champion in that event. All other athletes who achieve a qualifying standard also will be admittee.
A total of 18 athletes from the three divisional championships will qualify for the section meet.
The top three place-finishers in each event at the section finals advance to the state prelims with the exception of the 4×800 relay in which only the top two teams will qualify.
The state prelims are scheduled May 24 at Buchanan High School in Clovis, followed by the state finals on May 25 at the same site.
Prelude to prelims
Metro Conference teams wrapped up regular season competition on Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25, to determine dual meet championships.
While not in contention for Metro-Mesa dual meet championships, Thursday’s Eastlake-Bonita Vista match-up at BVHS still highlighted a number of individual athletes who will contending for medals at the upcoming league finals.
Among them:
Mater Dei Catholic junior Matthew Carr is the top-ranked South Bay League runner in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 while Bonita Vista senior Austin Snook is the top-ranked runner in the event in the Mesa League with a time of 11.01.
Otay Ranch senior Gevonni Richey (11.04) ranks next up in the Mesa League.
Carr entered this week ranked second in the section behind Helix sophomore Brandon Arrington (10.43).
Other top 10 section-ranked athletes on parade on the Barons’ oval included Eastlake sophomore Jaelyn Williams in the girls 800 (second in 2:09.87), 1600 (first in 4:43.20) and 3200 (first in 9:27.31), the Eastlake girls 4×400 relay team (10th in 4:05.98) and Eastlake senior hurdler Isabella Robinson (eighth in the 100 low hurdles in 15:36 and sixth in the 300 low hurdles in 46.43).
Bonita Vista senior Natalie Guevara ranked in a tie for third in the girls triple jump with a mark of 37-2.
Top 10 boys marks included Bonita Vista freshman Jerry Stokes (tied for second in the high jump at 6-6), Bonita Vista senior Anthony Wise (eighth in the triple jump at 44-5), Bonita Vista senior Tyler Scott (tied for 10th in the high jump at 6-2), Bonita Vista junior Sebastian Aranda (10th in the mile in 4:38.72),
Snook set personal records in winning both the 100 dash and 200 dash at Thursday’s meet. His 11.01 time in the 100 dash bested Eastlake junior Landon Albano (11.22) while his 22.78 time in the 200 dash topped Eastlake senior Andreaz Ramos (23.32).
Snook is hoping for a medal after failing to qualify for last year’s league finals. He already seems to have his finish line celebration down after notching both PRs.
“I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the season,” he said. “I want to have a very eventful finals.”
Williams, a fourth-place finisher at last year’s state championships in the 3200 run and at last fall’s cross country state finals, tripled in winning the 800 (2:10.73), 1600 (5:36.33) and 3200 (10:4123) on Thursday. She owns school records in every event she has attempted.
She expects to enter all three distance events at the league finals.
“I’ve set PR marks in all my events this season, now I’m looking to set time standards for the postseason,” she said.
It could be a memorable finish to her second season of high school competition after shatterin all the school records, according to EHS coach Francine Koopman.
Guevara finished first in the triple jump competition (36-10.5) and second in the long jump (16-9)
Robinson claimed victories in both the 100 low hurdles (15.51) and 300 low hurdles (47.96).
Wise won the pole vault competition by clearing 12-6 while finishing second in both the long jump (20-10) and triple jump (40-10.5).
Stokes and Scott both cleared 5-10 to top the high jump competition while Aranda was second in the 800 run in 2:02.04.
Event winners on the boys side included senior Caleb Kipp in the 400 dash (51.18), Bonita Vista senior Ian Ridge in the 800 run (2:01.75), Bonita Vista junior Joshua Hoffman in the 1600 (4:39.74), Eastlake sophomore Brady Albright in the 3200 (10:23.35), Eastlake senior Nathan Linck in the 110 high hurdles (16.26) and 300 intermediate hurdles (43.38), Eastlake senior Caleb Addleman in the shot put (48-5) and discus throw (120-1), Bonita Vista senior Jayden Peterson in the long jump (22-2) and Eastlake junior Jacob Trang in the triple jump (42-1.5).
Event winners on the girls side included Bonita Vista senior Tatiana Colon in the 100 dash (12.70), Bonita Vista sophomore Sofia Nunez in the 200 dash (26.99) and 400 dash (59.71), Eastlake senior Abigail Garcia Hernandez in the shot put (30-3), Eastlake junior Kylah Wax in the discus throw (81-4), Eastlake sophomore Elia Penfold in the high jump (4-8) and Bonita Vista senior Neveah Elefante in the pole vault (9-0) and long jump (17-7).
Bonita Vista’s foursome of Peterson, Snook, senior Emilio Gollaz and sophomore Adrian Cruz combined forces to win the boys 4×100 relay in 44.52 while Eastlake won the meet-ending 4×400 relay in 3:32.31 (senior Charles Leon, freshman Jacob Lovell, Ramos and Kipp).

Bonita Vista went 1-2-3-4 in the girls 100 dash with Colon, junior Jamia Marie Valenc (12.84), Ramirez (13:05) and Garay (13.07).
Eastlake went 1-2-3 in the girls 800 (Williams, sophomore Andrea Prado-Tamayo in 2:23.40 and senior Sienna Blanco in 2:36.67) and also in the 1600 (Williams, senior Vanessa Vuong in 5:38.69 and freshman Charlize Cruz in 6:00.58).

Eastlake went 1-2 in both the boys 110 high hurdles (Linck and junior Santiago Zapata in 17.62) and 330 intermediate hurdles (Linck and Zapata in 44.23).
Eastlake went 1-2-3 in the boys shot put: Addleman, junior Andres Muniz (36-7) and sophomore Nathan Kemp (36-6).
The Titans went 1-2 in the boys discus throw: Addleman and Kemp (106-7).
Bonita Vista went 1-2-3 in the boys high jump: Stokes, Scott and junior Gian Monroy Beltran (5-6).
Bonita Vista went 1-2 in the long jump with Peterson and Wise.
Eastlake sophomore Aidan Burgar placed second in the boys pole vault at 12-0 while junior Joseph Thames followed in third place at 11-0, senior Emilio Navarrete Ocampo in fourth place in 10-0 and sophomore Mason Maryan in fifth place at 10-0.
League leaders
Addleman ranks first in the conference with a shot put mark of 48-5 ahead of Olympian senior Manny Cerda (45-1.5) and seventh in the discus throw (120-1) behind leader Zarayan Crews (130-5) of Sweetwater.
Addleman attributes his progression in the shot put to “more co-ordination, strength and speed.”
“I’m trying to get to the CIF finals but winning it will be a challenge against Helix senior Anthony Gash (top-ranked in the section in the shot put at 57-9),” he said.
After the track and field season is over, the six-foot-two, 240-pound tight end in football said will concentrate on football where the next level will take him to Claremont McKenna College at the Division III level.
“I’m very excited,” the first team all-league captain said. “It was a great senior season, a lot of guys performed beyond expectation. The record (4-7) wasn’t what we wanted but it was still a great senior season.”
BV’s Nunez ranks first in the girls 400 dash (59.71) while Elefante has the top mark in the conference in the girls long jump and Guevara the top mark in the girls triple jump.
