As we embrace the colder months and approach the end of the year, we’re delighted to share some exciting updates and initiatives from Southwestern College. It is our commitment to provide the best educational experiences and opportunities, not only within our local community but on a national scale.

Southwestern College is proud to introduce the University Now Initiative (UNI) in partnership with the City of Chula Vista, a collaborative project to identify the academic programs needed to meet the workforce demand of our binational region. A diverse steering committee of regional planning agencies, research and education institutions, business and industry, and policy makers are guiding the study under the leadership of Southwestern College. The work is a reflection of the strong partnership and commitment in the region to strengthening the higher education ecosystem in South County.

In our pursuit of academic accessibility, we are excited to announce a strategic partnership with Arizona State University. This collaboration opens up new avenues for our students, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Through this partnership, students from Southwestern College will have access to unique educational opportunities– such as obtaining their Bachelors degree.

In addition to our partnership with Arizona State University, we continue our partnerships with National University, Point Loma Nazarene University and San Diego State University, creating a network that enhances the educational landscape. These partnerships bring forth a wealth of resources, expertise, and opportunities for our students, making Southwestern College a hub of diverse and enriching academic opportunities.

SWC’s efforts are centered on serving you, our community. We invite you to explore the possibility of joining our vibrant student body for the upcoming Winter and Spring semester. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in classes, such as: Auto Science/Basic Mechanics, Develop/Start a New Business, Sociology of Gender and many more. Together, we can build our future workforce by providing quality education and career opportunities to enrich lives.

Navigating the financial aspects of education can be complex, but we are here to support our students through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process. Our Financial Aid Office is dedicated to helping students explore opportunities for financial assistance, including scholarships and emergency aid, ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder educational pursuits. Students who enroll in the Spring semester and complete a FAFSA or California Dream Act application may receive emergency assistance of up to $500 based on need. All eligible students will be emailed an application from the Financial Aid Department.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the community, we invite you to participate in our upcoming events, including the Theatre, Dance and Musical Performances. These events are open to the public, and we encourage you to take advantage of the resources and opportunities they offer. For more information, please visit swccd.edu/calendar.

As the year draws to a close, we are actively engaged in our End of Year Giving campaign. Your support is crucial in enabling us to provide the necessary resources and services to our students. In a recent survey – 66% of Southwestern College respondents reported they experienced food insecurity, housing insecurity, or homelessness in the past 12 months. Your contributions to the campaign go towards scholarships and various student services, like our Basic Needs program. To donate and support our students, please visit swccd.edu/foundation.

Wishing you a restful holiday season and a bright, successful new year.
