Southwestern tops Mesa, 42-14, earns berth in Saturday’s American Division Championship Bowl

Last Saturday’s American Mountain Conference game between Southwestern College and San Diego Mesa College started on an ominous note for the host Jaguars when Mesa’s Jay Numanila-Wone returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

But Southwestern quickly regrouped and reeled off six unanswered touchdowns to defeat the Olympians, 42-14, and in the process, finish in a tie atop the conference standings with College of the Desert, both with 4-1 records.

By virtue of SWC’s superior ranking, the Jaguars (9-1) will play at American Pacific Conference winner L.A. Valley (10-0) in the American Division Championship Bowl this Saturday.

Kick-off is 6 p.m.

College of the Desert (6-4) will host American Metro Conference champion East Los Angeles (8-2) in the Patriotic Bowl, also this Saturday at 6 p.m.

A third team from the American Mountain Conference will participate in post season play as Victor Valley (6-4) plays at Antelope Valley (6-4) in this Saturday’s High Desert Bowl.

The bowl game appearance is the fourth in five years for Southwestern.

“It was a great win for the program and against a neighborhood rival,” SWC head coach Ed Carberry explained. “The team is co-champions with Desert. We are going to the conference championship over Desert because we had a higher RPI … our opponents had higher rating.

“It’s been a great year and we are working hard through the end of the season.”

Fast finish

Following Numanila-Wone’s kickoff return, the Jaguars promptly got down to the business of winning the football game.

Joe Joe Hudson scored on a 10-yard run and then tossed a six-yard scoring pass to Davin Reynolds to give the hosts a 14-7 lead.

Hudson’s game-tying TD run capped a five-play, 71-yard scoring drive, while Reynolds’ TD reception capped a 13-play, 96-yard scoring drive.

Reynolds would finish the game with three touchdown catches, including a pair from Hudson.

Donell Pleasant ripped off a 42-yard scoring run to hike SWC’s lead to 21-7. Eastlake High School alumnus Isaiah Strayhorn capped a short two-play drive with a 63-yard touchdown run to increase the Jag’s lead to 28-7.

Reynolds then caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Mike Glass to make the score 35-7 in Southwestern’s favor at halftime.

Reynolds completed his TD trifecta by hauling in a 47-yard scoring pass from Hudson midway through the fourth quarter.

42-7 Jaguars.

Mesa closed out scoring with 3:14 left in the game when Bryce Washington caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from George Caragiannide.

Aeden Johnson supplied extra-point conversions on all six SWC touchdowns.

Hudson and Glass combined for 315 passing yards as the Jags rolled up 571 yards in total offense to 298 for the visitors. Southwestern held a decisive edge in the running game with 256 net rushing yards to Mesa’s net total of 116 rushing yards.

Hudson completed 12 of 17 passing attempts for 201 yards with a pair of touchdown throws while Glass completed 11 of 16 passes for 114 with one touchdown and one interception.

Reynolds had nine catches for 134 yards with the three TDs while Tajon Mondy made eight catches for 108 yards.

Strayhorn led SWC with 112 rushing yards on 16 carries while Hudson gained 48 yards on six rushing plays. Pleasant gained 47 yards on three carries.

Southwestern’s defense was active with seven sacks, 14 tackles for losses, three fumble recoveries and one interception (by Demetrious Gibbs for 34 yards).

Mesa finished the season 1-4 in conference play, 3-7 overall.

College of the Desert tied SWC with a 4-1 conference record by defeating visiting Victory Valley, 48-41, last Saturday.
