Meeting dates set for Update

The public is welcome to attend hearings on the National City Focused General Plan Update later this month.

City officials conducted an update to the plan, which serves as a guide to achieving the community’s goals and vision for future growth and use.

Updates to the plan include the following draft elements: land use, transportation, safety, and the Climate Action Plan update.

The housing element was added last August.

One aspect being examined, according to the 2023 project description, is House National City.

“House National City is proposed as an opt-in program for developers to be able to use a different way to calculate the number of homes proposed on a parcel. Rather than putting a limit on the homes based on what is called ‘dwelling units per acre,’ it uses the site and unit square footage as well as the allowable height of a lot to determine the number of homes that can be built. This metric is called Floor Area Ratio (FAR).”

The focus of House National City is development in areas served by public transportation with a frequency of at least every 15 minutes and that provides housing for very-low and low-income households.

The city is hosting public hearing meetings on the following dates:
•Aug. 21: Planning Commission Public Hearing (Action Item – Recommendation to City Council)
• Sept. 5 – City Council Meeting Public Hearing (Action Item – Recommendation to Adopt)
• Sept. 19 – City Council Meeting Public Hearing Second Reading
